Almost all phone-astrophotography disappointment comes from pointing a phone at the wrong thing. Start at the top of this list.

The single best thing a phone can do at a telescope, and it is not close. The Moon is bright enough that the phone behaves like a normal daylight camera. A steady hand and thirty seconds will give you a picture worth keeping. If you only take one photo tonight, take this one.
🌌 Constellations & the sky, on a tripodVery good
Modern night modes stack several seconds of exposure and pull out far more stars than your eye can see β€” often surprising people who have just been told the sky here is washed out. Needs the phone held completely still: a tripod, a wall, or wedged against a railing.
πŸͺ Planets, through the eyepiecePossible, expect little
Saturn's rings will show as a distinct shape and Jupiter's four moons come out as dots β€” that is a genuine achievement and worth doing. But a planet is a tiny, brilliant target, and the phone will usually blow it into a white blob unless you cut the exposure hard. Manage expectations before you look at the screen.
✨ Bright clusters, through the eyepieceHit and miss
Omega Centauri or the Pleiades can register with night mode held to the eyepiece. Anything fainter is fighting both the sky glow and a very small sensor.
🌫️ Nebulae and galaxiesDo not try tonight
These need long exposures on a tracking mount β€” the whole point of the Seestar. A phone at the eyepiece will show you a grey rectangle, and you will conclude the telescope is broken. It is not. Ask a volunteer to show you what the Seestar is capturing instead.

The Moon, step by step

  1. Ask the volunteer first, and let them get it centred and focused. Never touch the telescope β€” you will lose the target for everyone behind you.
  2. Turn your screen brightness right down and switch the flash off. Check it, do not assume.
  3. Hold the phone's main lens right at the eyepiece, almost touching, and keep it square-on. Move it slowly around until the bright circle fills the screen β€” this is the fiddly part and it takes everyone a few tries.
  4. Tap the Moon on screen to focus and meter on it. Then drag the little sun/brightness slider down, usually one to two stops. Phones badly overexpose the Moon by default; the craters are hiding in that white glare.
  5. Use burst mode β€” hold the shutter and take twenty. The air is always shimmering, and one frame will be sharper than the rest.
  6. Step aside and review afterwards, not at the eyepiece. There is a queue behind you.
A ten-dollar phone-to-eyepiece clamp turns this from luck into a repeatable result, and is the single best accessory for anyone who wants to do this regularly.

The sky itself, step by step

  1. Brace the phone against something solid, or use a tripod. Handheld night mode will smear the stars into short lines.
  2. Open the camera and let night mode trigger on its own β€” it appears once the phone senses how dark it is. If your phone has a manual or "pro" mode, try ISO 800–1600, 10–20 seconds, focus at infinity.
  3. Use the 3-second timer so that pressing the shutter does not shake the shot.
  4. Point at the brightest, highest part of the sky you can find, away from the car park lights. Include a bit of a building or tree at the edge β€” it gives the picture a sense of place and helps the phone focus.
  5. Longer is not always better. Beyond about 20 seconds the Earth's rotation turns stars into visible streaks. That is a nice effect on purpose and a ruined photo by accident.
Three rules on the observing deck.
1. No flash, ever. A single flash destroys the dark adaptation of everyone around you, and it takes them twenty minutes to get it back. It also does nothing whatsoever for a subject that is 380,000 km away.
2. Screen brightness to minimum, and use your phone's red or night filter if it has one. A white screen at face height is almost as disruptive as a flash.
3. Never adjust the telescope. Ask the volunteer. Nudging the tube to "improve" your framing loses the object for the next thirty people in the queue.
