The Maya were the great timekeepers of the ancient world. From the rainforests of Mesoamerica they watched the sky with astonishing care β above all the Sun, the Moon and, more than any other people, the planet Venus β and wove what they saw into interlocking calendars of breathtaking precision.
Their sky begins with creation. In the Popol Vuh, the gods set three hearthstones and lit the first fire β the stars of Orion, with the glowing Orion Nebula as its smoke; and the cosmic Turtle, from whose shell the Maize God was reborn, is Orion's belt.
Along the sky road (the ecliptic) march the calendar animals: Tzab, the rattlesnake's rattle (the Pleiades); the Scorpion; the Peccaries (Gemini). And at the still pivot of the turning sky sits Xaman Ek', the North Star, guide of merchants.

No people tracked Venus like the Maya. Over eight years the planet's five appearances as morning-and-evening star trace a five-pointed star across the sky β the rhythm at the heart of the Dresden Codex.
The 584-day star. Venus returns to the same place in the sky-and-Sun cycle every 583.92 days β its synodic period. Five of these cycles take almost exactly eight years (5 Γ 584 β 8 Γ 365), so Venus draws a near-perfect five-pointed star. The Maya knew this to within hours across centuries.
Kukulkan. Venus as morning star was the feathered serpent returning; its heliacal rising after conjunction was watched with dread and used to time war and ritual.
The calendars. The 260-day sacred Tzolk'in and the 365-day Haab' mesh like gears into the 52-year Calendar Round β and the vast Long Count counted the days from creation itself.
Maya sky-lore survives in the codices (Dresden, Paris), the Popol Vuh, carved monuments and living Maya communities; securely mapped figures are few, so this is a faithful, representative selection. Tzab = the Pleiades, the Turtle/Hearthstones = Orion, and Xaman Ek' = Polaris are well established; the ecliptic "zodiac" animals of the Paris Codex are more debated.
